Silencing the Symphony: A Comprehensive Guide to Eliminating Wastegate Rattle in Audi RS3 Models

The Audi RS3 has been known to suffer from wastegate rattle, which is caused by having the wastegate in the normally open position. The wastegate is a valve that controls the amount of exhaust gas that is allowed to bypass the turbocharger, which in turn affects the boost pressure produced by the turbocharger. The wastegate rattle noise is predominantly heard in the comfort setting on the Audi RS3.

The wastegate actuator arm is connected to the wastegate valve and is responsible for opening and closing it as needed. The main reason why the Audi RS3 is particularly prone to wastegate rattle is due to the design of its turbocharger.

On the pre-facelift Audi RS3, the turbocharger does not suffer from the wastegate rattle, as the wastegate is in the normally closed position. On the opposite side of the turbo, there is a boost actuator and when the boost pushes against the spring inside the actuator, it opens the wastegate on the other end.

On the other hand, the wastegate is in the normally open position on the turbocharger for the facelift RS3. The actuator arm on this turbocharger is vacuum controlled. Unlike the pre-facelift turbocharger where the actuator spring opens the wastegate, the facelift turbocharger actuator spring vacuums the wastegate closed.

This video discusses the horrible wastegate rattle on Audi RS3/TTRS/RSQ3's. We discuss what causes this and how to eliminate this rattle.
